Nathr, Almanaara Win Thursday Final Racecard

Nathr, jockeyed by Jim Crowley, had the Dubai World Cup season going right for him at Thursday’s penultimate fixture at the Azizi Victoria 1600m Handicap Race. Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Nathr likes a bit of space in his races and we enjoyed that Thursday evening.

Almanaara was nice and fresh Thursday evening after eight weeks off. He proved to be the only one of the ten runners who went to post for the 1200m Azizi Riviera handicap.

For the Azizi Samia 1400m Maiden, Gundogdu jockeyed by Xavier Ziani took full advantage, mounting a breather and winning under a drive. Azizi Farhad 2200m handicap race was taken by Tailor’s Row, also confidently jockeyed by Xavier Ziani.

Pilgrim’s Treasure jockeyed by Adrie De Vries took it home at the Azizi Mina 1400m handicap, clocking a second career win, following the 1800m in England.

Thursday’s action began with a dramatic 2000m maiden, the Azizi Plaza, in which winner Dubawi’s Thunder, piloted by Bernardo Pinheiro for trianer Rashed Bouresly, galloped on resolutely to hold off Cranesbill and Cape of Eagles.

The finale, the Azizi Star, a 1600m handicap, was won in dramatic fashion by Cachao, under Antonio Fresu for trainer Satish Seemar. Owned by Ali Muktar, the son of New Approach appeared well-beaten by runaway frontrunner First Down at the top of the lane, but the leader hit the proverbial brick wall and ambled along until inhaled late by the winner and a narrow second-place finisher Tobaco.

All seven races were on the dirt surface and racing returns to Meydan Racecourse for the final time this season a fortnight on Saturday for the mouthwatering $30 million Dubai World Cup card.
