North America Clinches World Cup Ticket On Super Saturday Race

Updated: Aug 2, 2018

The final fixture of the 2018 Dubai World Cup Carnival, Super Saturday, introduced in 2003 as a dress rehearsal for the Dubai World Cup card three weeks later, lived up to its billing with memorable winning efforts. All seven races are mirror images of the actual races on the main race day occasion, with $30 million prize money.

North America, jockeyed by Richard Mullen, owned by Ramzan Kadyrov, had a smooth success at the Group 1 US$400,000 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 Race.

Jebel Hatta 1800m, the main turf race,  with $300,000 tab, was a great spectacle with the lead seeming to change hands at least six times in the final 400m. Godolphin’s Blair House, claimed the prize money, jockeyed by James Doyle.

Al Bastakiya 1900m on dirt restricted to 3-year-olds, with a tab of $250,000 was the first race on the card and turned into a procession by Yulong Warrior, jockeyed by Richard Mullen.

The Group 3 $200,000 Mahab Al Shimaal 1200m dirt course was claimed by Jordan Sport who made an impressive dirt debut under Adrie de Vries, while Godolphin’s Jungle Cat, set a record, winning the  Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint 1200m, jockeyed by William Buick.

There was a spectacular conclusion to the Group 3 Burj Nahaar 1600m on dirt as Kimbear, jockeyed by Pat Dobbs and owned by Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, gave a dramatic finish to the race. Finally, the nightcap was the Group 2 $250,000 Dubai City Of Gold sponsored by Emirates Skycargo, a prep for the Group 1 $6 million Dubai Sheema Classic over 2410m on turf. The race turned into a battle in the final 300m between stablemates Frontiersman and Hawkbill, with Hawkbill taking it home, confidently jockeyed by William Buick.
